Nicolas Cheng is an artist and researcher based in Stockholm. He earned a BA from the Design Academy Eindhoven (2006). Shortly afterwards he joined Fabrica, the research and communication centre in Treviso, Italy. He holds an MFA from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design (2010) and a PhD from the University of Gothenburg (2019). Part of his artistic research focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to craft and jewellery practice, and its relationship to geopolitics, materiality and environmental humanities.
While maintaining an individual studio practice, in 2011, he initiated Conversation Piece with fellow artist Beatrice Brovia. The collaborative practice is a hands-on study on interconnectedness and interdependency: a reflection on making together with/through conversation, friction, and a dialogic space where notions of authorship and self-reliance are challenged.
His individual and collaboration work has been shown at the Pinakothek der Moderne (DE), Stedelijk Museum‘s-Hertogenbosch (NL), RIAN Designmuseum (SE), Triennale Design Museum (IT), Design Miami/Basel (US/CH), Asia Society (HK), Z33 - House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture, Hasselt (BE), Galleri F15, Moss (NO), Cheongju International Craft Biennale (KR), Sanit-Etienne Design Biennale (FR), MAD - The Museum of Arts and Design (US), The Dowse Art Museum (NZ), Schmuck, IHM (DE), among others.
