Nicolas Cheng - based in Stockholm, Sweden

My artistic practice focuses on interconnectedness of craft-making with material entanglements; it is informed by the subject of jewellery but is not limited to it. I aspire to an openness and cross-pollination between disciplines and an elastic attitude as a maker, influenced by my multicultural background and interdisciplinary approach which spans interior architecture, product design, jewellery and craft. This attitude has affected the way I understand jewellery, as a discipline in itself extremely elastic and constantly in flux. And the same qualities (elasticity/adaptability/fluidity) apply to what I understand craft - where and how craft is learned, produced, made, known, discussed, passed on - may look like, today.

Studied Interior Design and Environment Architectures in London and Hong Kong,

Nicolas graduated with a BA in Design from

the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2006, and shortly after he was artist in residence at Fabrica Research Centre of Benetton Group in Treviso,

Italy. In 2010, he earned his MFA in Jewellery

and Corpus from Konstfack in Stockholm.

His PhD, awarded by the University of Gothenburg in 2019, is published under the title World Wide Workshop: The Craft of Noticing (2019).

While maintaining an individual studio practice,

in 2011, together with fellow artist Beatrice Brovia, they co-founded Conversation Piece,

Together they have developed projects across scales and medias, with works that ranges from self-organised exhibitions, to concept-driven jewellery/objects and installations.
